School Committee Approves Three-Year Superintendent Contract in 4-0 Vote
East Longmeadow School Committee approved a new three-year superintendent contract and confronted a projected $1.2 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2027 at its January 27 meeting.
EAST LONGMEADOW -- January 27, 2026, East Longmeadow School Committee approved a new three-year superintendent contract and confronted a projected $1.2 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2027 at its January 27 meeting. Assistant Superintendent for Business Pamela Blair told the four-member committee that maintaining level services would require a 6.25 percent budget increase totaling $2.3 million, while preliminary town discussions have centered on a 3 percent figure yielding roughly $1.1 million. The committee voted 4-0 on the superintendent contract covering the 2026-2027 through 2028-2029 school years, whose financial terms were negotiated in executive session. Strategies discussed to close the gap include freezing the $80,000 curriculum renewal line, expanding school choice enrollment, and applying a $297,000 vocational tuition balance toward a special education prepayment, though Superintendent Gordon Smith cautioned against using the full amount: "You want to be cautious with any one of these moves." Governor Healey's preliminary state budget proposes a Chapter 70 increase of $176,625 for East Longmeadow, the minimum per-pupil floor, leaving the district still well short of level-service funding.
