EAST LONGMEADOW -- Town and school officials used the Oct. 19 School Committee meeting to keep working toward a final operating agreement for the new high school pool, with officials describing the remaining work as "crossing t's and dotting i's" rather than open disagreement.

TOWN -- Resident Carolyn Bliss, identifying herself as a longtime resident and "avid swimmer," told the committee she was one of more than 3,200 voters who backed building the pool and said she expects it to function as a true community pool, not one subject to new restrictions she worries could amount to "a bait and switch." Committee members and a presenter identified as Mr. Christensen walked through operational security details, including door locks and an alarm system with separate zones so the pool can be secured while school is in session and vice versa. Officials said access during school hours would be limited to appropriate staff, cited as physical education staff and the athletic director, Kevin Mickey, with the aim of keeping pool users separated from the rest of the high school. Officials said they are coordinating lock and alarm settings with town and aquatics staff before finalizing the governing document.
